Growing Numbers in Trademark ApplicationIn 2011, applications for trademark registration in China reached a record high of 1.417 million, Patent law in China or up 2.8 times over 2002, and doubled the registrations in 2007. China has been the No. 1 in the world for ten consecutive years in terms of trademark application quantity. As of the end of 2011, the accumulative trademark applications in China stood at 9.7115 million, while the accumulative registrations were 6.6507 million, and effective registrations being 5.5101 million, a growth of 2.86 times, 2.84 times and 2.31 times over 2002 respectively; all these figures present champions of the world. On March 19, 2012, the accumulative trademark applications in China exceeded the 10 million threshold, and the exact statistics of 10,000,346 on that day marked an important milestone in the history of China’s trademark development. With the aggressive progress in “Going Global” strategy of Chinese companies, trademark and brand have made new headways in internationalization, and trademark has become an important competitive weapon for our business firms to explore overseas markets. In 2011, Chinese nationals filed 2,053 applications with Madrid International Trademark Registration System (one trademark covering multiple classes), up 8.4 times over that of 219 registrations in 2002, ranking the 7th in the world, and No. 1 among the developing countries; the accumulative registrations hit 13,297, up 11.1 times over that of 1,097 registrations for 2002.
